Marxism’s Failure Tripped the USSR
Why did the conservative and traditionalist anti-Communists share this firm conviction on the inevitability of Marxism’s failure? For most, Marxism is a materialist political philosophy championing socialism and egalitarianism. For many conservatives, however, Catholics in particular, Marxism is simply an … Continue reading
President Ronald Reagan’s Use of Humor
Reagan could tell a good joke and recount an amusing anecdote. However, more importantly, it showed that he understood the value of restraint and that he could disagree without impugning the character of his political opponents. A lighthearted response had greater impact than a strident or bitter denunciation of an adversary. Reagan sought and achieved political victories without indulging in the politics of personal destruction. He did not see his rivals as enemies but as components of a free political system in which debate and disagreements are inevitable. Continue reading
Republican Primary Lesson: It’s Not About You
The existential threat to America today is not communism but colonization by illegal aliens and Muslim “refugees.” Political correctness subverts our First Amendment rights and shuts down even discussions about the threats to the middle class. Continue reading
The Pharisees of Our Time vs. the Blue Collar Billionaire
Some lay Catholics and priests may object to Trump’s personal life-style as a younger man. Let them remember we’re choosing a president, not a pope. Let them remember, too, especially in this Vatican-proclaimed Year of Mercy, that Our Lord is a merciful God. Continue reading
Collaborators: Understanding Trump’s Rebellion
Is Trump a true conservative convert in the tradition of Reagan? Time and elections will tell. What is clear is that, in the words of one disgusted conservative, voting for Trump is a “Hail Mary” pass many conservatives are quite willing to make given the lateness of the hour. Meanwhile, the usual alliance of liberal activists and collaborator attorneys and powerbrokers already is talking of impeaching Trump should he be elected president. This should surprise nobody, especially those who must daily wage guerrilla battles simply to preserve the right to remain a conservative. Continue reading
Remembering Nancy Reagan
Nancy Reagan did sacrifice herself for Ronald Reagan, but it was willing and loving. She devoted herself to his career and his legacy, but also set the tone for the modern First Lady. She was pretty, dignified but also modern in her views and charitable works. She took a more direct interest in his well being after the assassination attempt and she worried more, but also loved more and cried more when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Continue reading
Being Anti-Establishment Should Not Bring Chaos
The proper counter to socialism and corruption is nationalism. It is the only broad and deep concept of society that can uphold conservative values and channel the creative energy of capitalism to the common good. It is also the only ideology that can rebuild the Reagan coalition and widen the base of the Republican Party by bringing back the hard-working Americans the “country club” party has alienated. It is ironic that a billionaire with global business interests is the one who has taken up the nationalist banner with his Reaganite pledge to “make America great again.” Continue reading
Obama’s Multicultural America and the Transformation of an Exceptional Nation
There is nothing wrong with human rights, except that it misses out God. It was during a God-fearing era when John Paul II was pope and Ronald Reagan was president, when American society combined spirituality with morality and brought communism to its knees. Today, we should heed President Reagan’s warning: “When we will forget that we are a nation subordinated to God, we will simply become a subordinated nation.” Continue reading
Texas Senator Ted Cruz Announces for President – Appeals to Christian and Conservative Values
On Monday, March 23rd, I had the pleasure of taking part in another Liberty University (LU) convocation. During this event, Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz announced his candidacy for president of the United States.
Conservatives Must Reverse National Decay – and Save the GOP from Self-Destruction
With national elections looming, all the structural factors favor a Republican wave that will shift control of the Senate and give the GOP majorities in both houses of Congress. Yet, the actual Senate contests in Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, New Hampshire, and North Carolina are considered too close to call. This implies that despite President Obama’s fall in public confidence as his economic and foreign policies have faltered; the Republicans have not presented voters with a strong case for putting them into power.
Nevada Cattle Rancher Standoff Far More Complex than Simple Lawbreaking
Cliven Bundy claims that he inherited “pre-emptive grazing rights’ on federal land because his ancestors kept cattle in the Virgin Valley since 1877, before the Department of the Interior was created. However, by continuing to graze his livestock on federal land for over 20 years after he stopped paying fees in 1993, Bundy may have acquired “prescriptive rights;”
Debt Reduction Comes Back into Style
For most of its existence, the Republican Party has championed rigorous fiscal conservatism. Balanced budgets, aversion to federal debt, “pay-as-you-go” government: These were the mainstays of Republican governance at both the federal and state level for over a century. Republican leaders who became heroes of their party made fiscal responsibility a hallmark of good government.
Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan: Echoes of Clear and Principled Messages
Modern politics is often fought on the battlefield of the 19 inch or the 50 inch screen with grim bursts of image artillery directed by experts and consultants. But for all the experts and consultants, it is the ability of the politician to communicate what he feels and believes is true that trumps everything else.
Be Afraid: Government “Help” for the Children
Ronald Reagan famously said, “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help.'”
