Bombs and Ballots: Intelligence Betrayals Before British Elections

The prevailing atmosphere of Washington, DC, what President Trump calls “the swamp” runs deeper and wider than any have ever imagined. The dysfunctional intelligence community raising its ugly head is becoming the revenge of the swamp monster. In fact, people are recognizing that the swamp may not just be in Washington, DC. After President Trump’s recent visit to Europe, and particularly to NATO, the Atlantic Ocean might be the biggest, far-reaching political swamp the world has ever seen.

The Manchester Arena bombing has sent many into a moment of introspection. Described as “the belly and guts of the nation” by George Orwell, unfortunately Manchester is not new to bombings.

During World War II in 1940 just before Christmas, German Luftwaffe bombs blitzed the city for two days. In both 1992 and 1996, the IRA bombed the same city, but gave enough warning to the media and law enforcement before the blast to evacuate the area. No one was killed in 1992 and 1996, but a total of 225 people were injured. The 1996 bomb from a parked truck was the largest ever detonated by the IRA in the UK, and the single largest bomb to go off there since World War II. Over the last 77 years, the terrorist predators in Great Britain seem to have seamlessly shifted from the Nazis, to the IRA, to ISIS.

Since September 11 in 2001, Islamic terrorists have been highly selective in choosing the dates to attack the West. When attacking the United States, September 11th was chosen by Osama bin Laden because he wished to reverse the curse that had haunted Islam ever since the Muslims lost the Battle of Vienna on September 11, 1683, in the face of victorious European Christians. The subsequent bombings in Madrid occurred precisely 911 days after September 11th on March 11, 2004. That day, 191 people were killed and nearly 2,000 were injured. It was the most devastating attack on European soil since the Lockerbie bombing in 1988.

But a significant detail, which is often missed, is that Spanish Socialists, the holdover from the previous Socialist Prime Minister, dominated Spanish intelligence services. The Spanish Socialists were part of the opposition and vehemently against any participation in the War on Terror with NATO or the United States.

A year before the Madrid bombings in 2003, at the same time every evening, many in Spain would publicly bang on pots and pans in the streets or out their windows to protest the War on Terror. They questioned along with the leftist media, for instance, whether the weapons of mass destruction even existed in Iraq, which over the past few years has largely been confirmed to have successfully transferred to Syria. When the 2004 Madrid bombings occurred, Spanish intelligence deliberately fed false information to then conservative Prime Minister, Jose Maria Aznar, just weeks before his re-election day. Spanish intelligence deceptively informed Prime Minister Aznar that the bombings were orchestrated by ETA, a domestic terrorist separatist group from the Basque region of Spain, rather than by al Qaeda. So Prime Minister Aznar addressed the Madrid attacks immediately, publicly blaming ETA, which of course was strongly denied by ETA.

Meanwhile, Spanish intelligence services had intentionally withheld the audiotape message by al Qaeda claiming responsibility for the Madrid bombings. The aim? Presumably to stop the re-election of any allied leaders of America, particularly partners in the War on Terror but most of all for the Spanish Socialists to regain power. The Spanish Prime Minister was fighting two wars simultaneously: Aznar joined President George W. Bush in sending approximately 1,400 troops to Iraq to fight the War on Terror; and he was also entangled in a major internal political battle with his own intelligence services along with the Spanish Socialists. After Madrid was attacked on March 11th and Aznar recognized the political repercussions that entrapped him, the Prime Minister made an emergency request that King Juan Carlos delay the Spanish elections. But the King refused, reminding Aznar that he had not been honest to the people about ETA versus al Qaeda as being the source of the bombs. Even the King appeared to believe the media and intelligence manipulations. Aznar lost his re-election as Prime Minister. It was a masterful political hit job most likely directed by the opposition leader Felipe Gonzalez, who happened to be the previous Spanish Socialist Prime Minister for over 13 years. One can only imagine the Spanish bureaucratic loyalties to the Socialist Gonzalez.

In 2004, Aznar was the first casualty in a new intelligence war that continues today.

Now, over 13 years later, we are witnessing similar intelligence operations in the United Kingdom, weeks before Election Day, with the Manchester bombings and again, symptoms of a war resurfacing in the intelligence community. Except this time, it could be in both the U.S. and the UK. One only needs to read the news headlines to know that there are new battlefronts within and beyond MI5 and MI6, as some would say, amidst their bid to manipulate the political arena, driving a wedge between the political will of the people and elected officials. The recent leaks of classified information on Manchester by the New York Times are a foolishly cavalier attempt to divide the Anglo-American alliance.

In the United States, the intelligence community has been aggressively attacked and politically manipulated by the left since the 1970s, when Democrat U.S. Senator Frank Church of Idaho led the “Church Committee” in an inquiry that targeted and dismantled the CIA, infusing it with left-leaning socialist tendencies ever since.

So now, the notion of a non-politicized intelligence community in the West today, is as absurd as claiming that the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit doesn’t legislate from the bench. A little more than a week before the British elections the real question becomes for the leaders in the United States and the United Kingdom: should those in the intelligence community be punished for running interference in the political arena? Some would argue that they should not only be punished, but also held accountable for possible treason.

Betrayal seems to run in both directions across the Atlantic.

A failure in intelligence is why so-called “experts” allege that Trump colluded with the Russians during the U.S. Presidential elections. That leaked information has been traced to British intelligence sources. Yet, the “proof” that such cooperation even existed between Trump and Russia still hasn’t been found. It is as U.S. Senator Ted Cruz wittingly claimed, “a nothing burger.” Yet many Democrats and Socialists press on with their false narrative, claiming it is reliably sourced in the intelligence community. The President’s external battles on intelligence are with the media, but his internal clashes are a bit murkier.

Ironically, in a combined weak attempt by ISIS terrorists, and intelligence agents gone wild, British voters must prove on 8 June that the attempt to create a Manchester divided has failed. President Trump’s external battles on intelligence are with the media, but his internal clashes are a bit murkier.

In fact, the Manchester bombing revealed that some leftover bureaucrats from the Obama Administration, including those in the intelligence world, have been exposed in trying to undermine and discredit the Trump Administration and imperil a genuine partnership with Teresa May as the British Prime Minister. It is now time for the Trump-May alliance to recognize where the added danger lies, as a result of the Madrid-Manchester bombings — in their respective intelligence agencies.

But then, just when one thinks that the U.S. and President Trump might be at a disadvantage with the intelligence wars, Trump secures a stunning multi-billionaire defense contract with Saudi Arabia on his first foreign trip (days before the Manchester bombing, by the way), diminishing substantial business opportunities from French defense companies and other European contractors with Saudi Arabia. Thus, that recent white knuckled handshake between Presidents Trump and Macron just became a little more interesting.

It is essential that elected leadership does not repeat the mistaken trust of the intelligence community as Prime Minister Aznar did in 2004. The motivated trickery by intelligence groups is a real threat. Calling out the intelligence manipulations is simply the first step in ensuring they backfire politically. The voting electorate is cleverer than some intelligence circles give them credit. All of the above scenarios will actually amplify the British voices in the UK elections, choosing their leadership, and their confirmation of Brexit on June 8th.
