Facing a Crucial Election Year: Will Traditional Values Survive?

America of anno domini 2016, a year of crucial elections, is at a historic crossroad. The society at large and its political leaders are divided and polarized as never before. Will the upcoming presidential election be an attempt at returning to traditional values, or a fall into the socialist abyss guarded by the left’s dogma of political correctness ending forever Reverend Franklin Graham’s American dream? The day of reckoning is upon us.

Speaking at the First Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Florida, in January 2015, Reverend Franklin Graham said:

“The American dream ended on November 6th, 2012 in Ohio. The second term of Barack Obama has been the final nail in the coffin for the legacy of the white Christian males who discovered, explored, pioneered, settled and developed the greatest republic in the history of mankind.” And he added that a coalition of “…feminists, gays, government workers, union members, environmental extremists, the media, Hollywood, uninformed young people, the ‘forever needy,’ the chronically unemployed, illegal aliens and other fellow travelers have ended Norman Rockwell’s America…”

In Franklin Graham’s opinion, traditional America will never out-vote these people. Conservative Americans, he continued, are now politically irrelevant and will probably never be able to legally challenge the new trend.  In his view, the American Constitution has been replaced with Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals and with the views of such people like the international socialist George Soros. They and their acolytes have brought us ‘Act 2’ of the New World Order, he said, and, paraphrasing a passage from the Declaration of Independence, concluded:

“Those who come after us will once again have to risk their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor to bring back the Republic that this generation has timidly frittered away due to white guilt and political correctness.”

Reverend Graham is not alone. In fact, many God-fearing patriots have foreseen and feared this God-less evolution of American society.  In his 2009 book Liberty and Tyranny- A Conservative Manifesto, author Mark Levin also observed that morally, politically and economically the United States has departed from its original purpose and is going on a dangerous path. And he quoted George Washington, who wrote that religion and morality are indispensable to political prosperity. One may legitimately ask: where is morality in today’s world?

The new political tendency in America is toward some form of state interventionism and socialism.  If 20 to 30 years ago this trend was hidden, today the leftist leaders make no bones about it. The reality is that such individuals try to use the state for their own goals.  All this is allegedly done in the name of the people and for the benefits of the masses. In this regard, C.S. Lewis wrote: “Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive.”

Levin also quotes Alexis de Tocqueville, who observed that “Democracy and Socialism have nothing in common but one word – equality.” But there is a difference.  “While democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude.”  Is America going this way? It seems so, and Reverend Franklin Graham is right to be worried. Traditional and Christian America has already changed. The present is murky and the future is risky. President Barack Hussein Obama has renounced the Congressional Christian Prayer Week.

The situation of Western Europe and the European Union is even worse from a moral point of view. For instance, the traditional Brussels Christmas Fair has already changed its name. The Western European media is avoiding any references to Christianity, while the leftist leaders avoid being photographed with a church or a cross in the background. As for the Christmas greeting cards, the new trend is to use season or winter greetings to avoid offending  Muslims. And, there are increasing voices to ban altogether Santa Clause and any reference to Christmas. All these trends occur, while millions of Muslim immigrants flood into Europe and display openly their abhorrence for Western and Christian values.

Together, with a strong anti-Christian campaign, there is also an endless effort in Europe to promote the collective rights of LGBTs and to enforce strong laws against those who criticize this group. For example, a law debated recently in the Romanian Parliament provides fines of up to US $25,000 (100,000 Lei) for anyone who criticizes LGBTs even on the Internet or on any social media, such as Facebook.  An average monthly salary in Romania is about 300 US dollars.

As reported by Romanian media, Gabriele Kuby, a German sociologist, a mother of three and a writer, came to Romania to promote her new book, The Global Sexual Revolution: Destroying Liberty in the Name of Liberty. In her opinion, Western Europe is virtually a lost cause but there is still hope in Eastern Europe. Among others, she warned her audiences that early sexual education ruins the childhood of the kids; the much advocated new gender orientations destroy family values; and the new sex trends in the West turn Christian values upside down. In her opinion, these are done purposely to destroy Europe’s traditional values. Can America and Europe oppose this trend? Or will they succumb to the left’s dogma of political correctness in a new dark age of social debauchery and political instability?

The late American sociologist and Harvard professor Samuel Huntington warned us over 20 years ago that the future could trigger a clash of civilizations. Have we arrived at that future? He also wrote that the decay of the West may occur gradually, but he cautioned that it may slide on an S curve, slow in the beginning and rapid thereafter, and thus come up very quickly as it did in the former Soviet Union. As for signs of decay, Huntington cited increasing crime and violence, drug abuse and social disintegration. One may add these days another dangerous sign – social polarization.
